OUR STORY

A beautiful soul had a beautiful dream for me...

The dream I didn't know I wanted was realized after a long journey that I never wanted to take. Everything I do with my homestead is because my brave son, Cody, wanted me to be happy after his death. His dream for me is truly what kept me going.

ABOUT THE OLD STONEHOUSE HOMESTEAD

When my boys were little my favorite activity to do with them was to drive out Malboro road, drive past all the apple trees, and visit a farmers' market, pumpkin patch, or petting zoo. It was our happy place. When they got older, we all got into searching for old, abandoned houses. I loved them and so did Cody.  We had normal, happy lives until we got the news that Cody had cancer just a few short weeks after high school graduation.

Our lives forever changed. He fought. I fought. He did every treatment imaginable. The last try after nothing worked was a stem cell transplant. He got a few healthy months. During that time, I started to date. Cody said "Mom-move out to country and buy an old house with land, get animals, have a garden, bake or work at a farmer's market on the weekends but don't date. And if you don't date, I'll buy you a donkey named Carlton". "Carlton" was his take on my then boyfriend Carsten.

Cody got pneumonia in November of 2017. We found out he was cured of cancer on Dec 17th, and he died Dec 26th unexpectedly in his sleep with me next to him. His body was tired, and he never quite recovered from the pneumonia.

I lost myself after that for quite a long time. I don't even remember months of it. I was in a complete state of anguish. There is a saying: Where there is deep grief there is great love. My heart was just incomplete without him.

After a few years, I started focusing on finding that old house with land and learning to homestead. I hid chickens, turkeys, and bees in my neighborhood yard. And then I found it-an old stone house from 1826. It needed a lot of work and we are still working on it. I bought a donkey named Carlton within just a few weeks of moving in. I'm constantly learning, expanding, and staying busy. And after 6 years from his passing I can say I have found happiness doing all the things he wanted me to do....sometimes those who love us know what will make us happy more than ourselves.

So-I'll continue to enjoy this old house and farm and appreciate all the peace and happiness it brings knowing Cody is with me here.
